Stephen Curry is set to finalize a one-year contract extension worth $62.6 million with the Golden State Warriors on Thursday, as confirmed by his agent, Jeff Austin, to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. This agreement will extend his contract through the 2026-27 season, at which point Curry will be 39 years old.
At 36, Curry previously signed a four-year, $215 million deal with the Warriors in 2022. Over the next three seasons, he is guaranteed to earn $178 million and is anticipated to become the first player to surpass $60 million in a single season during 2026-27. Having been undercompensated during the early years of Golden State's successful era, Curry has held the title of the NBA's highest-paid player since the 2017-18 season. The four-time NBA champion is expected to maintain this status for a decade. This extension will elevate Curry's total career earnings to $532.7 million by the 2026-27 season, placing him in a rarefied group, according to Spotrac. LeBron James is projected to be the first player to exceed the $500 million threshold this upcoming season, while Kevin Durant is expected to fall just short by less than $200,000 in 2025-26. If Durant continues playing, he will join this elite group alongside Curry. Paul George is also on track to reach this milestone in the 2027-28 season.Curry's contract is set to expire concurrently with Draymond Green's, provided Green exercises his $27.7 million player option for the 2026-27 season. The Warriors currently have no commitments beyond that season, except for Buddy Hield's $10.1 million player option for 2027-28, of which only $3.1 million is guaranteed. Meanwhile, Golden State's head coach, Steve Kerr, is contracted only through the 2025-26 season.
This development comes on the heels of Curry's outstanding performance in Team USA's concluding matches at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Together with James and Durant, Curry amassed 60 points and achieved a remarkable 17 of 26 from beyond the arc in victories against Serbia and France, securing a gold medal in his inaugural Olympic appearance.
During the previous season with the Warriors, Curry averaged 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 6.1 assists over 74 games, earning a spot on his 10th All-NBA team. Having spent his entire 15-year career with the franchise that selected him as the seventh overall pick in 2009, Curry remains a premier player. However, it is uncertain whether Golden State can position him to vie for a fifth championship. This offseason, the team parted ways with Klay Thompson, Curry's backcourt partner since 2011, and Chris Paul, yet they may have enhanced their roster by acquiring De'Anthony Melton, Kyle Anderson, and Hield. The front office's attempts to secure a star player were unsuccessful, as trade discussions for Paul George and Lauri Markkanen did not materialize.
Golden State may still be active in the trade market. Forward Jonathan Kuminga and wing Moses Moody, both lottery selections from the 2021 draft, are eligible for extensions on their rookie contracts until October 21, just before the start of the 2024-25 regular season.
