In his 2024 preseason debut with the New York Giants, Daniel Jones demonstrated the validity of Tom Brady's assessment within just four throws.
The Giants quarterback made a critical error while being tackled in his own end zone, attempting a risky pass to Theo Johnson that was intercepted by Texans cornerback Jalen Pitre, resulting in an effortless touchdown.
This misstep occurred just three passes after Jones nearly threw a pick-six to Derek Stingley Jr. on his first attempt, although Stingley failed to secure the interception.
Notably, this incident unfolded a day after Tom Brady referenced Jones as a quarterback who could potentially throw an interception during a discussion at Fanatics Fest in New York City.
As anticipated, fans took the opportunity to poke fun at Jones following his regrettable error, especially after Brady seemingly called him out—unintentionally, of course. Regrettably for Giants supporters, Jones' situation did not improve immediately after that misstep. On the next possession, the offense appeared to gain some momentum, achieving three first downs, including a 14-yard catch by Malik Nabers. However, the drive concluded with yet another interception when Jones attempted to force a pass to Jalin Hyatt along the sideline. On the Giants' fourth drive of the game, Jones finally displayed some promising signs. He delivered an impressive 44-yard throw to Darius Slayton, which set up a touchdown run by Devin Singletary just two plays later.
Last season, it was relatively simple to dismiss the offensive problems due to the poor performance of the offensive line. However, early indications this preseason suggest that this unit still has significant issues. The inability of Jones to consistently improve the situation may result in considerable challenges for the offense. A quarterback entering his sixth season should not be making the types of throws that lead to turnovers and near-turnovers. With a disappointing 6-11 record last season, the pressure is increasing on general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. Should the Giants experience another difficult season, substantial changes within the organization could be on the horizon.
